Do Our Actions Speak Louder Than Our Words?

Image
In the biblical accounts found in Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26, we read of a paralytic being brought to Jesus. A multitude of people had gathered in a house provided for Jesus (Mark 2:1), because they had heard of Jesus' ability to heal (Mark 1:21-37).

What Kind Of Behavior Does God Tolerate?

There's a sign on the outside wall of a local business establishment here in El Paso, that has printed in large letters, the following message:

What Kind Of Friends Do We Have?

Image
True friends are like diamonds— very precious and rare. They will listen to our problems, stand up for us when we are in the right; are happy when we succeed, and sad when we fail. They provide us wise counsel in order to prevent us from making foolish choices.

An Excellent Role Model For Success

Image
In Joshua 1, the Lord sets forth the basics or ingredients for Joshua’s success. If Joshua were to adhere to God's instructions, he would enjoy "good success" (Joshua 1:8). These same instructions will allow us to stand successfully before God as well.

Is Our Bible Worn Out?

Image
The story is told of a Bible teacher who held up his well-worn Bible and told his students, "Every Christian should wear out a copy of the Bible every 10 years." His challenge reminds me of the saying:

Seven Guidelines For Profitable Bible Study

Image
Profitable Bible study involves more than just opening to a chapter and reading the words on the pages. The following are seven guidelines to help us get the most out of our study of God's inspired word (2 Timothy 3:15-17):

Where Can We Find True And Lasting Satisfaction?

Image
In the sacred text found in 1 John 2:12-27, the apostle John warns mature men and young men of the following three lusts:

Are We Bored With The Mundane?

Image
Have we ever complained about having the same kind of food, or wearing the same style clothes day after day? Many of our recurring complaints focus not on what we don't have, but on what we do have, but find boring and uninteresting.

What Is True Freedom?

Image
More and more, we are seeing and hearing actors, actresses, and entertainers using vulgar language in describing in sickening detail their immoral activities. Seemingly, these folks who shamelessly discuss their sins in public, obviously think of themselves as "liberated" because they dare to flaunt their immorality before a gullible public (Romans 1:31-32; cf. Psalm 50:16-22; Hosea 7:1-7).

Exhibiting Empathy Toward Others

Image
The dictionary defines the word "empathy" as: "Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives."

An Uncommon Beauty

Image
Today, the name Susan Boyle is an international vocal artist, but before she took the stage of Britain's Got Talent in 2009, she was virtually an unknown. Compared to the other contestants on stage, she was just a plain Jane person — not physically beautiful at all.

"Not A Hoof Shall Be Left Behind"

Image
In Exodus 7-12, we see the efforts of God through Moses attempting to persuade Pharaoh to release the children of Israel from bondage. Through a series of plagues, we see Pharaoh's heart becoming more and more resistant— the plagues of blood, frogs and lice not moving him. But when the flies came, Pharaoh offered his first compromise: "Go sacrifice to your God in the land" (Exodus 8:25).

Sharing Our Faith With Others

Image
There is a principle of life that holds true in every aspect of life— that whatever we do not use, we lose (Matthew 25:24-29). Just as our physical body functions more effectively when we exercise it, our faith in Christ grows as we share that faith with others (1 Timothy 4:7; Hebrews 5:14; cf. 2 Timothy 2:1-2; Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 1:1-10; 1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 3:18).

We Can Overcome!

Image
There are many things that we can overcome through the help of our Savior (Philippians 4:13; cf. 1 John 4:4-5, but for brevity's sake, we will list the following ten:

You Can Learn A Lot By Walking

Image
There's always something that you can either learn by observation or to think about when you go on morning and afternoon walks. Not only is walking beneficial health wise, but the mind can clear itself of all the garbage that the world has thrown at it. Many times, I talk to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to help me clear my mind of worldly things which are temporary, and to concentrate on spiritual things which are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18; Colossians 3:1-4).

Would We Remain Steadfast And Unafraid?

Image
In our public prayers, we often thank God for the fact that we live in a country where we can freely worship Him without fear of reprisal or molestation. Indeed, this kind of prayer is specifically approved in Scripture (1 Timothy 2:1-2). It is therefore right that we pray in this regard, so we might continue to enjoy this blessing.

Realizing The Value Of Our Existence

Image
Emphasizing the value of human life, the Psalmist states in Psalm 49:7-9 ESV, "Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice....." When God created each part of our world, He pronounced it "good" (Genesis 1:10,12,18,21,25). However, in the creation of male and female, it was "very good" (Genesis 1:31).

Veteran's Home Devotional

Image
Every third Saturday of the month, several members of the Montana Street congregation, go to the local Ambrosio Guillen Veteran's Home for the purpose of conducting a thirty minute devotional for the residents. One of our elders lead the residents in singing spiritual hymns; we offer prayers in their behalf; and we bring a practical and encouraging spiritual lesson from God's word that the residents can apply to their everyday living.

Life Has A Way ....

Image
There's a lot to be said regarding life, both negative and positive. For one thing, life on this planet is not easy, for we live in a harsh and cruel environment, where many times, life is not held in high esteem by our fellow man. Additionally, there are many obstacles and challenges along way, many of which are not pleasant to endure (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Speak Words Of Kindness

Image
As I read the account of Joseph and his interaction with his brothers in Genesis 45-50, I'm always impressed by the forgiving attitude that Joseph displayed toward his brothers despite their selling him into slavery (Genesis 37:15-28). One of the reasons why they sold Joseph into slavery was because of their envy toward their brother; Joseph being his father's favorite son (Genesis 37:3-4).

Solving The World's Problems

Every Monday morning, I have breakfast with some saints at The New Clock Restaurant here in El Paso. Because of the homey atmosphere, the restaurant is very popular with the residents who live in Northeast El Paso.

Righteousness Exalts A Nation

Image
The writer of Proverbs once stated: "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34).
