A Comforting Daily Rhythm Of Life

In today’s fast-paced society, a lack of sleep is a major issue for many people. A lack of sleep upsets the body’s biological rhythms, causing mood disorders and depression. However, like every other problem we face in life, God’s word provides a solution for folks who can’t sleep.

In the lament found in Psalm 4 (sometimes called “the evening prayer“), we see that David is greatly distressed by people who seek deluded comfort from false gods, but he is comforted by the fact that God will answer the prayers of the righteous (Psalm 4:1-4; cf. Proverbs 15:29).

He also recognizes the fact that because he trusts in God, he can lie down and sleep peacefully at night (Psalm 4:6-8).

Psalm 5 has been called “the morning prayer” because in Psalm 5:3, David implores the Lord to “hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

Together, both of these Psalms by David provides us with a comforting daily rhythm of life — trusting in the Lord at night, and seeking the Lord’s guidance by day (Psalm 5:3,7-8).

Peaceful and adequate sleep can only come by us giving all of our problems over to Him (1 Peter 5:7), and then placing our complete trust in the Lord, the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6), asking Him for His guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6; cf. John 16:33; Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:13-14), for He will hear our prayer (Isaiah 65:24; cf. Daniel 9:20-23).
