The Doctrine Of Baptisms

An individual once asked, What is “the doctrine of baptisms” mentioned in Hebrews 6:2? The context indicates that the writer is speaking about New Testament teachings — note the phrase, “doctrine of Christ” in Hebrews 6:1 KJV.

The following are baptisms that are recorded in the New Testament:

1) John’s baptism of repentanceActs 19:4.
2) Holy Spirit baptismActs 1:5; cf. Acts 2:4; Acts 10:44-46.
3) Baptism of fire Matthew 3:11.
4) Baptism of sufferingMatthew 20:23; Mark 10:38; Luke 12:50; cf. Mark 8:31; Mark 9:12.
5) Baptism to fulfill all righteousnessMatthew 3:15.
6) Baptism for the dead — 1 Corinthians 15:29.
7) Baptized into Moses in the cloud and sea1 Corinthians 10:2.
8) Water baptismActs 8:36-39; Romans 6:3-4; Gal. 3:26-27; Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21.

Dear reader, there is only “onevalid baptism in the Christian age today (Ephesians 4:5; cf. Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:16) — the one mentioned that is authorized by our Lord and necessary for our salvation (Acts 10:46-48). It’s the same baptism found in the book of Acts experienced by those who were obedient to the Lord’s terms of salvation — one of those terms being baptism (immersion) in water for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38: Acts 8:37-39).
