Why Do Men And Women Marry?

An individual asks, “Are there scriptures in the Bible that tell us why men and women get married, and how to stay married to your spouse?”

Yes, the Bible tells us there are two main reasons why men and women marry:

1) God designed the marriage relationship for companionship (Genesis 2:18). Included in that companionship, is an understanding of one another’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs (1 Peter 3:7), which includes sexual intimacy (1 Corinthians 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4).

When a man chooses a woman to be his wife (Genesis 6:2), she becomes the complement of himself; that which is needed to make the complete man, so the two become one (Matthew 19:6). It takes both to make one being as originally created by God (Genesis 2:20-25).

2) For continuation of the human race or producing offspring (Genesis 1:28; Genesis 9:1; Genesis 9:7; Genesis 9:19; cf. Psalm 127;4-5).

Staying married to our spouse is easy when we are willing to demonstrate a committed and sacrificial love for one another as Christ demonstrated for His church (Ephesians 5:22-24; Ephesians 5:25; Colossians 3:19; Acts 20:28).
