On Being Led By The Spirit

An individual once asked, Paul says in Romans 8:14 that we are “led by the Spirit of God.” My question is, “How are we led by God’s Spirit?”

The text in Romans 8:14 states: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

The Holy Spirit leads by means of divine revelation (cf. Galations 1:11-12; Ephesians 3:1-5). From Ephesians 6:17, we know that the medium the Spirit uses is the "word of God." The result or “fruit” of the Spirit’s teaching through this medium is: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galations 5:22-23).

Note that by inspiration, Paul states in 1 Timothy 4:1:

Now the Spirit expressly says ….

Thus by inspiration, Paul spoke what the Spirit directed him to speak, and wrote what the Spirit directed him to write (1 Corinthians 2:1-13; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

When an individual conducts his life by the Holy Spirit’s instruction, he will seek spiritual goals rather than fleshly goals (Matthew 6:33; Galations 5:16; Colossians 3:1-2) and will thus produce the proper "fruit" of the Holy Spirit’s teaching through God’s faith systemthe word of God (Romans 10:17).
