To Be A Best Friend

To be a best friend is an honor we cherish, and one we should seek to live up to — but sometimes we don’t always achieve that honorable and lofty goal. For 37 years, my late wife and I were “best friends.” In fact, it was a joy and encouragement to hear her say, “You’re my best friend,” which she did quite often.

However, no matter how hard we try, we sometimes fail in living up to the high standard of being a friend who never lets others down. We all fail from time to time — forgetting to do what we should do, or simply allowing selfishness to build a barrier between us.

As faithful followers of God, we take comfort in knowing that we are God’s friends — He being a true friend who will never let us down. Abraham was called “the friend of God” — that friendship being related to his faith (2 Chronicles 20:7; James 2:20-23; cf. Hebrews 11:6,8-10).

Jesus explained how we can receive the designation of “best friend” as well. He said to His disciples: “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14).

Beloved, there is no better friend than the Lord, for we know that He will never leave us nor forsake us, and will always keep His promises (Hebrews 13:5; 1 Kings 8:56-58; Joshua 21:45; Joshua 23:14; cf. Luke 21:32-33; Hebrews 6:10-19).
