Refrain From Carrying Out The "Ungolden Rule"

It’s easy to render vengeance on someone who we think has done us wrong, isn’t it? But it takes inward reflective thinking on our part to refrain from such an action (2 Corinthians 13:5; James 1:19-25).

Do we remember what Paul said?

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men …. do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:17,19).

The antidote for thoughts of vengeance is found in the very next verse:

Therefore if your enemy hungers, feed him; If he thirsts, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head” (Romans 12:20; cf. Proverbs 25:21-22).

Beloved, may our prayer be, "Lord, help us to refrain from carrying out the “ungolden rule” (Proverbs 20:22; Proverbs 24:29), but the will to carry out the “golden rule” as we daily interact with our fellow man (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31), in Jesus’ name we ask it, Amen!
