Wesley Smith, a special consultant to the Center for Bioethics and Culture and a bioethics attorney, has written this article about a New Zealand woman who had brain cancer. Lecretia Seales not only lost her fight against the cancer, but against the New Zealand High Court, after she petitioned them to allow her a doctor who would be willing to help terminate her life because she did not want to experience a painful death.Mr. Smith wonders why Lecretia Seales was named "New Zealander of the Year" — similar to CNN naming Brittany Maynard, quote, “extraordinary woman of the year.” He points out the fact that other people who fight terminal disease, but do not opt for assisted suicide, are completely ignored by the news media. Many of these terminally ill people choose to lead productive lives, helping others before they pass from this life.
Mr. Smith then asks this question: "Who should be the role model: Those who pursue “death with dignity” or “life with dignity?”
Beloved, since suicide is never an option for the Christian, the only viable role model is the individual who chooses "life with dignity" (2 Timothy 4:5-8 NLT).
