"Give Me The Bible"

One of the most popular hymns in our hymnbooks is “Give Me The Bible” written by Priscilla J. Owens. In the lyrics of each verse, Ms. Owens illustrates the following Bible truths (I have added pertinent scriptures for illustration purposes):

Give me the Bible, star of gladness gleaming (2 Peter 1:19),
To cheer the wand’rer lone and tempest tossed (Isaiah 54:11);
No storm can hide that radiance peaceful beaming (Mark 4:36-41),
Since Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:1-10.

Give me the Bible when my heart is broken (Psalm 147:2-3),
When sin and grief have filled my soul with fear (Psalm 119:39 KJV);
Give me the precious words by Jesus spoken (Luke 4:16-21),
Hold up faith’s lamp to show my Savior near (Psalm 119:105; John 6:63; Matthew 28:20).

Give me the Bible, all my steps enlighten (Psalm 119:133),
Teach me the danger of these realms below (1 Peter 5:8);
That lamp of safety o’er the gloom shall brighten (Proverbs 6:20-23; Proverbs 21:30-31),
That light alone the path of peace can show (Proverbs 4:18).

Give me the Bible, lamp of life immortal (1 Corinthians 15:51-57;1 Timothy 6:13-16),
Hold up that splendor by the open grave (Matthew 28:1-3);
Show me the light from heaven’s shining portal (Matthew 17:1-2; Mark 9:2-3; Luke 9:28-29),
Show me the glory gilding Jordan’s wave (Joshua 3).

Give me the Bible, Holy message shining (Psalm 119:105; 2 Peter 1:19);
Thy light shall guide me in the narrow way (Isaiah 9:2; Matthew 4:16-17; Ephesians 5:8,14);
Precept and promise, law and love combining (John 14:15; John 15:10-14),
Till night shall vanish in eternal day (Revelation 22:5; cf. Revelation 21:23).”
