How To Be Miserable?

The following article was written by the late Brother Dan Gibson, former preacher for the Montana Street congregation. In his good article, Brother Gibson emphasizes the fact that we will be miserable if we portray an attitude of selfishness in our lives (I’ve added appropriate Scriptures):

All of us are always thinking and working to find ways to be happy and stay happy. We don’t think often of how to be miserable, and yet, many find themselves in this state all too often. Listed below are some ways to be totally miserable. Let’s read them, think on them, and then make sure we avoid them.
  • When we talk about ourselves all of the time (Proverbs 10:19; cf. James 1:19).
  • When we think about ourselves constantly (Romans 12:3; Philippians 2:3).
  • When we are too sensitive to slights (Genesis 4:3-8).
  • When we expect to be appreciated all of the time.
  • When we trust nobody but ourselves (Proverbs 3:5-6; Psalm 37:3,5).
  • When we think no one is right but us.
  • When we always think that we know more than all others (1 Corinthians 8:1; cf. 1 Corinthians 13:4).
  • When we use “I” as often as possible (cf. Ecclesiastes 2; Luke 12:16-19).
  • When we shirk our duties if we can (Matthew 25:24-30).
  • When we do as little as possible for others (James 2:14-17; cf, Matthew 5:15-16).
  • When we demand agreement with our own view on everything (Amos 3:3).
  • When we think we are the only one that cares for the truth (1 Kings 19:1-18; cf. Romans 11:1-4).
  • When we sulk if people are not grateful to us for favors shown to them (Luke 15:25-30).
  • When we shut God and His Word out of our life (Hosea 4:6; cf. Isaiah 5:11-15).
