The Giving Of Our Word And Trust

Ramnath Subramanian (Ram for short) is a retired public-school teacher who writes for the El Paso Times on educational topics. His recent article here provides insight as to the value of keeping our word on any promises we make.

Ram provides us this quote from author and novelist George MacDonald:

"To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved" (source).

Ram's good article reminded me of a character in the TV miniseries, "Lonesome Dove" years ago by the name of Captain Woodrow Call. His promise to his good friend, Gus McCrae, was that he would bury his body in Texas, no matter what the cost.

When asked why he would take on such a hazardous journey from Montana to Texas to bury his good friend, Call replies:

"I gave him my word."

Beloved, just like Captain Woodrow Call's above statement, a Christian's word should be his contract no formal written contract being necessary.
