Questions About Jesus

A querist once asked me, “Why did Jesus come here poor and die poor? Why did Jesus leave so many sick and poor people in the world when He left?”

One reason was to teach His followers to have a humble and giving spirit — a servant spirit — a selfless giving spirit that desires to help others in time of need.

If everyone were healthy (both physically and spiritually), there would be no reason or need to serve others. So, our Lord left a bunch of poor and needy folks down here on earth so that we as His followers could humbly serve them, fulfilling their needs, both spiritual (Matthew 9:10-13) and physical (James 2:14-17; 1 John 3:14-19).

As Jesus humbly served others (Luke 4:18-21; John 13:1-17; Acts 10:38), so we too are to humbly serve others (cf. Romans 12:10; 2 Corinthians 8-9; Gal. 5:13; Gal. 6:1-2; 1 Peter 5:5-6).

Thus, our Lord’s statement: “The servant is not greater than his Lord….” [master] (John 13:16).
