A Look At The Key Word "Authority" In Finding The New Testament Church

Image
After looking at the following three articles here, here, and here, regarding people searching for and finding a church or congregation, I performed a search on the key word "authority" in each of the three articles and came up blank. The word "authority" was not found in any of the three referenced articles.

"A Church That Meets My Needs"

Image
The phrase “a church that meets my needs” is becoming commonplace with Christians who are also seeking a religion that “meets needs.” If the phrase implies a need to satisfy spiritual hunger, then it is a good expression. The voice of God should be heard through spiritual teaching as we need opportunities to serve, love and be called to repentance.

"It's Just The Way You Look At Things"

"It’s just the way you look at things,
That makes them good or bad,
It’s just the way you look at men,
That makes them sane or mad,

It's A New Day

Image
I grew up with a young man who became a preacher. He had an unusual gift. He could read a sermon and the next day get in the pulpit and repeat it word for word. Needless to say, that ability also helped him in school. I envied that gift until he confessed that two or three days after the sermon, or test, he wouldn’t remember anything about what he had read or said.

"One Another" Christianity

Image
God has made it abundantly clear that in His scheme of things, He wants Christians to be a part of each other’s lives. How thankful we should be that such is the case, for interacting with each other is one of life’s great joys.

Should We Hand Out Twinkies To The Starving?

Image
The brave sermon in Acts 14:14-15 was preached by brethren Paul and Barnabas in Lystra on their first missionary journey. While preaching the gospel there Paul healed a crippled man (Acts 14:7-10). The superstitious Lystrans thought they were the gods Jupiter (Zeus) and Mercury (Hermes). The local priest of Jupiter tried to worship them (Acts 14:13) provoking Paul and Barnabas’s response. They held nothing back in their response but spoke the unvarnished truth (the word of God) to them and condemned their paganism. The people later turned on them and nearly stoned Paul to death (Acts 14:19).

The Biggest Gift That God Can Give

Image
There is a list of folks I know all written in a book,
And every year at Christmas time, I go and take a look,
And that is when I realize that these names are a part,
Not of the book they’re written in, but of my very heart.

Going In One Ear And Out The Other

Image
The story is told of a doctor, a lawyer and preacher who went out deer hunting one morning. Some time later, they all saw, and shot at, the same deer. As they approached the fallen animal, they began to argue over whose shot it was that had hit the deer.

"Giving The World Your Very Best"

"It’s the hand we clasp with an honest grasp
That gives a hearty thrill;
It’s the good we pour into others’ lives
That comes back our own to fill.

Comparing Ourselves With Others Is Not Wise

Image
After reading this article by Lolly Daskal, regarding our need to stop comparing ourselves with others, my mind immediately thought of what the apostle Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 10:9-18; cf. Proverbs 21:2; Luke 16:12-15 NET:

Not Only Great Leadership, But Great Efficiency Matters In Any Business

Image
Lolly Daskal, President and CEO of Lead from Within, a global consultancy firm, provides us with the idea that great leadership matters in any business. However, I would submit that great leadership coupled with great efficiency, matters in any business, including the Lord's business (Luke 2:49).

"Go With Jesus"

Image
Because of our untrusting society, hospitality has become a lost art. Brother John Henson has recently written this above titled article, emphasizing the great need for hospitality in our society.

"Pippa, You've Got Mail!"

Image
Enjoyed reading this story about a kind and loving dog in Australia who loves to receive mail from the postman, personally delivering that mail to her family.

Controversial Statement Or Plain Common Sense?

Image
After reading this short article about an Austin city councilor being criticized for telling a group of Hispanic children to become productive adults so they "don't have to live off of others," it bothers me to see someone always playing the "race card" in order to downplay the truth. Beloved, not only Hispanic children, but all children need to become productive adults so they "don't have to live off of others," i.e., via the welfare system.

Some Back-To-School Articles

Image
Since school begins in the El Paso School District on Monday, August 22nd, I thought it appropriate to include the following articles associated with learning and teaching:

An Encouragement To "Spread The Word"

Image
Since February, 2014, there have been over 3,000 articles posted to this blog, covering many subjects and topics. Since one never knows when his last day on earth will be (Hebrews 9:27), I have posted these articles at an accelerated rate.

"Ask And You Shall Receive"

Image
It seems that Albuquerque is finally realizing the truth found in Matthew 7:7 NLT and is making a great application of it by providing the homeless the ability to become self-sustaining, providing them with real jobs.

God-Given Roles Of Men And Women

Image
After reading these two articles here and here, this writer has come to the conclusion that all the problems we find between male and female in our ungodly and immoral society, largely come about because men and women are confused about their specific gender roles.

Money And Frugality

Image
Not long ago, I read where 76% of Americans are now living from paycheck-to-paycheck and 31% of Americans have no retirement savings at all. This includes folks who are close to retirement age between the ages of 55 and 64. Looking at the wealthiest country that has ever existed on earth, these are indeed sad statistics.

Does Extraterrestrial Life Exist?

Image
The Bible is silent concerning the existence of extraterrestrial life. Rather, it focuses on the earth as the only planet that contains any form of life.

Are Christians Consumers Or Fruit Producers?

Image
As a purchaser of religious books, this writer is not especially fond of book publishers referring to me as a “consumer” because the word consume can mean “to destroy, by decomposition or burning” or “to spend wastefully.” The term brings to my mind a picture of forest fires devouring acre after acre of vegetation, leaving behind only scorched remnants of trees.

Are We Satan's Innocent Assistants?

Image
Once when Jesus declared that he would have to go to Jerusalem to suffer many things of the chief priests and elders and then be crucified, Peter flatly contradicted him — “Not so, Lord.” To Peter’s rebuking, Jesus responded saying: “Get behind Me Satan” (Matthew 16:21-23).

More Brainwashing Of Children By Our Public Schools

Matt Walsh "is a blogger, writer, speaker, and professional truth sayer." He is one of the writers for the online publication, The Blase.

What Is In Our Hands?

Image
Zookeepers who must handle snakes, tell us that an individual should never grab one by its tail because it can coil around in a split second and sink its fangs into a hand. The correct method is to control it by its head so it can’t bite.

What Is Death?

Image
In the early morning hours of Saturday, December 20, 2008, my beloved and aged mother (she was 87) passed from this life to be with the Lord (Philippians 1:23). As I reflected back on her godly life, I pondered over the thought of what it means to die.

Predestined For Eternal Life Or Eternal Death?

Image
A querist asks, “From Ephesians 1:4-5, Are certain people predestined for eternal life by God and certain people for eternal damnation?”

When Do We "Seek First" The Kingdom?

Image
From a cursory reading of Matthew 6:33, we understand that we as followers of Christ, must make God’s kingdom our number one priority. The question is, “When and under what circumstances should we do this?”

"If God Is For Us, Who Can Be Against Us?"

Image
Before God gave Moses instructions concerning the sending of men to spy out Canaan, He had reaffirmed His promise to give this great land to the children of Israel (Numbers 13:2,17-20).

Worry Breaks?

Image
Lolly Daskal, President and CEO of Lead from Within, a global consultancy firm, suggests that if we worry a great deal, perhaps scheduling "worry breaks" might be one solution to our problem of worrying. Or perhaps keeping a "worry box" might be another solution.

What About "Not Under Bondage"?

Image
A querist asks, “In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul is addressing several groups of people regarding marriage. I have two questions: Is Paul providing additional instructions for divorcing a spouse other than what our Lord taught in Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9, and what does the phrase, “not under bondage” refer to in 1 Corinthians 7:15?"

"Would You Put Your Life Between The Covers Of A Book?"

Image
Brother James Gibbons, late editor of The Sword and Staff publication, once recorded a personal testimony of a discussion he once had with a Methodist minister. Brother Gibbons was once a member of the Methodist church, but found, through a "diligent" study of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15 ASV), that their teachings regarding the mode of baptism and the baptism of babies were contrary to the teachings of the Bible.

Is It Self-Esteem Or Sinful Pride?

Image
In a Fox News report dated September 3, 2004, various schools around the country were putting “self-esteem” above academic standards. As a result, students were failing in their school work, but they all had “self-esteem!” Worse yet – their administrators and teachers were thrilled!

A "Worry Box" Or God's Hands?

Image
The story is told about a woman who kept a box in her kitchen that she called her “Worry Box.” Every time something troubled her, she would write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the box. She resolved not to think about her problems as long as they were in the box. This enabled the woman to put her troubles completely out of mind. She knew they could be dealt with later.

Can The Believer Be Lost?

Image
Question: “In the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, the one-talent man is cast into outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Is this a believer being cast into hell?”

What Value/Priority Have You Been Placing On The Assembly?

Image
Other than for some unusual difficulty in our lives, the answer to the above question can be found in our attendance/participation in services and gatherings that are designed to promote worship, unity, edification and/or encouragement.

It's Strange, Isn't It?

Image
Some Christians can be pushed, shoved, and insulted in the ticket line at a ball game, ignored in the beauty salon or barber shop, or “run over“ at the mall by people who just can‘t wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest electronic device, but they somehow never cease to frequent these places. One wonders what happens at the workplace, when such similar things happen — do these folks quit work?

Some Brotherhood Publications

Image
Every Christian should subscribe to at least one (if not more) of the publications produced by members of the Lord's church. One of my favorite publications is the Magnolia Messenger, which is free upon request.

Do You Know You Will Go To Heaven?

Image
A Christian lady phoned to ask if it was right for her to tell others that she knew she was going to heaven. She had begun to doubt it was right for her to say this to others because they might think she was bragging.

Bible "Faith" And "Evidence"

Image
In Hebrews 11:1, the Hebrew writer gives us not so much a definition of what constitutes faith, as a description of what faith does in the lives of men in the verses following (cf. Gal. 5:6; 1 Thessalonians 1:3; Hebrews 6:10; James 2:24). New Testament Christianity is a religion of “faith” (Romans 10:17). Faith is produced by the testimony of witnesses (Luke 24:34,43,48; Acts 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; 2 Peter 1:16-19; 1 John 1:1-3). We hear the testimony of witnesses, weigh the evidence, and reach a logical conclusion based upon the evidence presented (John 20:30-31).

Teach A Man To Study

Image
You’ve heard the saying, “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day; teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” Relative to God’s word, we might express this principle this way: “Teach a man what the Bible says, and he has knowledge for a day; teach a man to study the Bible, and he has knowledge for a lifetime.”

"You Will Be Like God"

Image
In Genesis 3:3-5, the serpent tells Eve the following: “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'” And the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God know that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

Another Blow To Premillennialism

Image
There are many folks in the religious community who endorse premillennialism. This teaching states that Christ will someday return to earth and reign from Palestine for a period of one thousand years. This doctrine contradicts clear Bible teaching.

Delight In The Law Of The Lord!

Image
The story is told of a man by the name of William McPherson, who had a charge of dynamite go off in his face which resulted in the loss of his eyes, hands and the feeling in parts of his face. He realized how much the Bible meant to him and how greatly he needed its strength, but he could not read the Bible in Braille because of his artificial hands.

Fulfilled Prophecies Of Christ -- What Are The Odds?

Image
In Deuteronomy 18:21-22 NASB, the text reads, “And you may say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken.
