Who Were The Sons Of God And The Daughters Of Men?

A querist asks, "Who were the sons of God and the daughters of men mentioned in Genesis 6:1-4?"

The "sons of God" were those men who were "led by the Spirit of God" (Romans 8:14; cf. Galations 4:6-7). In other words, those men who were led by the spiritual teachings of the Holy Spirit and not the worldly desires of the flesh (Galations 5:16-25).

Also reference Deuteronomy 14:1-2; 1 Peter 2:9.

The "daughters of men" were produced from the men who "began to multiply on the face of the earth" (Genesis 6:1; cf. Genesis 1:27-28).

Some Bible scholars express the idea that some of the sons of Seth, i.e., "sons of God" (Genesis 5:7apostatized from God's truth, and married women who were unbelievers from the lineage of Cain (see article herehere, and commentary here and here), causing an increased wickedness of man on the earth (Genesis 6:5).

Note the marriage principle that God lays down in Deuteronomy 7:1-6 with regard to marrying unbelievers. Also note the godly principle found in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 with regard to maintaining our spiritual purity.

As an example, the apostle Paul recommended having "a believing wife" (1 Corinthians 9:5 NKJV) in order to prevent any possible apostatizing from the faith (1 Kings 11:1-8).
