Scripture For Thought

Image
The apostle Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:33-34, “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals. Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame

Bible Success

Image
Different people in various ways define success. Success to some is the accumulation of goods. To another success may be academic achievement. And yet to another, success may be linked to the number of successful relationships in his life. Although one may enjoy success on several different levels, if he is not in a right relationship with God (Mark 16:16), he cannot truly say that he is successful in the most important endeavor of all (Mark 8:36-37). He does not enjoy Bible success.

"So Perfectly Does Everything Fit Together"

Image
In his latest El Paso Times article, Ramnath Subramanian uses the above titled phrase in describing the perfect harmony found in God's created works, the human body being one of those works (Psalm 139:1,13-16; Jeremiah 1:5; 1 Corinthians 12:18 NLT).

A Word To The Wise Regarding Professional Dress And Behavior

Image
After reading this Matt Walsh article from theblaze publication, this writer totally agrees to both men and women making application of the prudent policy that both Vice President Mike Pence and his wife have toward dressing and behaving professionally:

Dead Still Or Wide Open? Neither One

Image
It's seemingly the norm here in El Paso, for motorists having their mindset to either be sitting on dead still or wide open, regarding the speed of their vehicle on the roadway.

"Heresy Or Schism?"

Image
Recently at the annual diocesan council of his denomination the “Right Reverend” Peter J. Lee, the Episcopal bishop of Virginia, uttered these fateful words: “If you must make a choice between heresy and schism, choose heresy” (Agape Press, 2/6/2004). Lee was referring to the ongoing conflict within the Episcopal (Anglican) denomination over last summer’s ordination of V. Gene Robinson as the first openly homosexual bishop of the Episcopal Church - USA. Some conservative Episcopalians  are threatening to break away from the American church because of the ordination.

The Pursuit Of Pleasure Is A Fruitless Pursuit

Image
Sad to say, but addiction to pleasure seems to drive most of mankind's decisions, however, that same addiction has tremendous side effects (see herehere, here, here, and here).

Eight Tips On How To Avoid Hopelessness And Bitterness

Image
If we live long enough, we will have periods where we feel the anxiety of hopelessness and bitterness in our lives. They can be caused by a multitude of causes, such as the death of a spouse or loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of a best friend, etc.

Where There's Smoke, There's Fire!

As I have stated on this blog before ..... many times, the comments that are made under an article, are just as interesting (if not more so) as the article itself (see here).

Greed Is Just One Of The Many Vices That Is Causing America's Decline

Image
Since my collection of grapes was running low this morning, after my visit to the grocery store on Monday, I decided to stock up with some additional grapes today. When I arrived at the location of the grapes, I was aghast at the price ..... $2.99 per pound, when Monday's price was $.88 per pound.

"A Mind Is A Dangerous Thing To Waste"

Image
The author (R. Claire Friend) of this American Thinker article, brings out a very important correlation between third grade reading proficiency and incarceration.

"Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder"

Image
There's an old saying that says, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (see source). In other words, the perception of beauty is subjective in nature. There's another saying that says, "Beauty is only skin deep" (source), which indicates that a person's character is far more important than their appearance.

Mankind Has Got To Change Stuff!

Image
If I've learned anything in my 70+ years on this planet called earth, it's that mankind has got to change stuff (it's the nature of the beast!).

"You Can Fix Ignorance, But You Can't Fix Stupid"

Image
The above statement heading is something this writer has known for a long time, simply by observing people. As this statement indicates, "you can fix [spiritual] ignorance (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV; cf. Ephesians 3:14-19; Ephesians 4:11-13 - note how the phrase, "fullness of God" and "fullness of Christ" is associated with the word, "knowledge"), but you can't fix stupid" (Romans 1:18-32 NLT).

The Importance Of Fathers Spending Quality Time With Their Children

Image
While walking and doing some exercises at a public park, not far from my house this morning, I noticed a young father spending quality time with his two young sons. He was showing them how to do some stretching exercisesbefore teaching them how to properly throw and catch a baseball in their baseball glove.

Man-Made Religious Unity

Image
In the account found in Acts 23:7-9, the apostle Paul stood before a Jewish religious council (the Sanhedrin) in Jerusalem. He pointed out to them that he was raised a devout Jew and his arrest was because of his preaching on the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. At that point this council, who seemed united in their dedication to the Law of Moses, showed their true colors. In reality this council had not been united in decades. They were a squabbling group of sectarians that agreed on very little. The high priest and his family of Sadducees usually ruled the day because they controlled the temple in Jerusalem. By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul merely exposed the hypocrisy of man-made religious unity for all to see.

It Doesn't Take Long For Time To Travel

Image
By knowing the fact that there are sixty seconds in a minute, we know there are 86,400 seconds in one day. According to this online measurement device, there are 604,800 seconds in one week. This means that in one year, 31,449,600 seconds have elapsed (see article).

"Always Be Genuine -- You Will Get It Right Back -- Good Things Happen"

Image
As I read this CBS News article, by Jennifer Earl, regarding waitress Cayla Chandara receiving a $400 tip, plus $10,000 to help pay off her student loans, and helping contribute to her college education (all from strangers), I noticed the above titled statement from Cayla at the end of the article:

Chivalry Is Alive And Well!

Image
Over the past few months, I've had both young and older men and women open a hallway door, so I could push my mail cart through it in order to deliver the daily mail to the various departments within our administration building. I made certain that I thanked each and every one for their chivalry (courtesy), which is usually reserved for women only.

We Cannot Change God's Truth Into A Lie And Expect To Walk With Him

Image
As I read this American Thinker article by author E. Jeffrey Ludwig, regarding the empty pursuit of equality (see herehere, and here), my mind immediately thought of what the apostle Paul stated in Romans 1:22-25; cf. Jeremiah 23:25-40), describing the Gentiles' desire to change God's truth into a lie, simply because they chose to follow their own corruptible fleshly desires, rather than willingly follow the immutable law of the incorruptible God of heaven. As a result, they could no longer expect to successfully walk with God (Amos 3:3).

Cannot Be Concealed

Image
In the current edition of the "Think On These Things" publication, brother Rick Liggin has written this above titled soul-searching article, about the fact that so-called "secret sins" (not secret before God), will eventually find us out (Numbers 32:23).

"We Can't Do That"

Image
Our local school district's mail room has mail bags that are at least thirty years old. Because of daily use, they are severely frayed and torn (with gaping holes in them). Notification of said mail bags to management, have always ended up with this reply: "We can't do that" (for various nonsensical reasons that always has to do with the money factor).

How To Use Your Smartphone To Protect Your Attention, Rather Than Squander It

Image
In this Pennsylvania Gazette article about hacking the great distractor (the smartphone), author Alex Soojung-Kim Pangdelete, suggests that smartphone users should delete any distracting apps (games and social networks fired up while waiting in line at the supermarket or sitting in traffic), reclaiming that time as an opportunity to let our minds wander.

Masters Golf Tournament Phone Ban And Smart Children

Image
After reading these two articles here and here this afternoon, this writer has come to the following two conclusions:

Satan — The Master Distractor

Image
There's no question in this writer's mind that Satan is not only the master deceiver (Revelation 12:9), but the master distractor as well. In the temptation scene with Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11), Satan attempts to distract Jesus with offers of worldly wealth and power, promoting worldly pride (1 John 2:15-16), if He would fall down and worship him, to which Jesus replies, "It is written" (Matthew 4:4,7,10).

A Breed Apart

Image
In the house next to mine, lives a family, consisting of a father and three young daughters in their 20's (the mother is nowhere to be seen). They assist their father in operating a rental healthcare company that provides various home medical equipment and supplies to clients with medical needs.

Making A Covenant With Our Eyes

Image
While taking my afternoon walk today, there was a young woman who ran passed me on the sidewalk. She was in her middle 20's to early 30's, and was dressed with the tightest spandex body suit that I have ever seen.

You Can't Have Your Cake And Eat It Too!

Image
This morning at breakfast, my two Christian friends and I discussed the problem of couples living together without the benefit of marriage (see article). We also discussed what happens to children produced by such an uncommitted arrangement (see article).

Achieving A Double Dose Of Pleasure By Taking Care Of Business

Image
In this USA Today article by Peter Dunn, Mr. Dunn reports that Americans have an unhealthy obsession with pleasure spending, but we can achieve a double dose of pleasure by taking of business first (setting priorities - Matthew 6:33).

7 Secrets That Made Steve Jobs Successful

The narrator in this short video provides us with seven secrets that made Steve Jobs successful. The following is a list of those seven secrets:

"Keep Your Fork -- The Best Is Yet To Come"

Image
There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. As she was getting her things “in order” (cf. 2 Kings 20:1), she contacted her preacher and asked him if he would come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.

Resurrection Sunday?

Image
The other day I received a postcard from the Nazarene Church in town inviting me to their “Palm Sunday Celebration, Good Friday Service and Resurrection Sunday” services April 14-16. It goes on and says “We invite you and your family (and friends) to join us as we celebrate Jesus, our Risen Lord, this Easter season.” I imagine it will be an elaborate affair with a chorus, singing groups, egg hunt and pageantry. For many people who claim to be Christians. the observance of Christmas and Easter are the heights of their religious observance. But I'm reminded of what the Holy Spirit and the apostle Paul command the Christian in Colossians 3:17.
